Blue-Route-Mall-Senior Santa-Buzz-Ad-Final

Senior Santa Shoebox

1 October - 15 December 2020

Blue Route Mall will once again be giving shoppers the chance to play Santa to seniors by giving gifts and giving back to the elderly over Christmas.

Senior Santa Shoebox aims to spread joy to the elderly over the holiday season. A largely forgotten sector of the community, thousands of seniors are left ignored and abandoned in homes, with little to no social contact – a situation that can often result in abuse and neglect. The Senior Santa Shoebox aims to redress this imbalance and to show the elderly that they continue to be worthy and valued.

Maintaining its long-standing commitment to the community and to charitable programmes, Blue Route Mall will be taking part in the Senior Santa Shoebox initiative by packaging and delivering 120 shoeboxes to the residents of Lotus River Place, 125 boxes to the residents of Lilyhaven Place in Bonteheuwel and 95 shoeboxes for The Haven Old Age Home in Woodstock.

In order to make this Christmas a special one for the residents, Blue Route Mall is encouraging all shoppers to participate in the Senior Santa Shoebox initiative by way of a small donation. From food items like juice boxes and packets of biscuits, sweets, and crisps, to toiletries like shower gel, face cloths, deodorant, soap, shampoo, body lotion, toothpaste and brushes, and fun gifts like playing cards, lipstick, notebooks, crossword puzzles, plastic cups and mugs, scarves, and more, any and all small thoughtful gifts will be welcome.

Appropriately, the Senior Santa Shoebox drive will be launching on 1 October, this year’s International Day of Older Persons. Checkers Blue Route Mall will be sponsoring a gorgeous cake for each of the homes so that they can enjoy tea on this special day dedicated to the elderly.

To take part, simply purchase your gifts at any time from 1 October to 15 December, and drop them in the donation box at the Guest Relations Desk on the first floor. Once all donations have been collected, Santa and his elves will package the shoeboxes and deliver them to the homes in time for their annual Christmas parties – and we’re sure that the smiles will be something to see!

Christmas is the season of giving, and there’s no greater gift than to spread joy and hope over the holidays, and every day. Join us this year in doing just that and be a Santa to a senior this Christmas with Blue Route Mall.

Promotion runs 1 October to 15 December 2020.

52440 Plastic Shopping Bag Free WEB Blue Route 800x800 R1

17 August 2020

Woolworths has announced that the following Cape Town stores will be single-use plastic shopping bag free from 17 August:

  • Blue Route Mall
  • Pinelands
  • Hout Bay
  • Tygervalley Shopping Centre
  • Canal Walk
  • V&A Waterfront

Despite Covid-19 lockdown disruptions, this is part of a 22 store single-use plastic shopping bag free rollout in response to Woolworths’ commitment to phase out single-use plastic bags.

Since making this commitment Woolworths has been trialling a ‘low cost’ reusable bag in five plastic bag free food stores and a paper bag for its fashion, beauty and home purchases.  Both bags are made locally by supplier development beneficiaries and constructed from either fabric made from recycled plastic (PET) or Forest Stewardship Council® – certified recycled content, sourced from the same mill where Woolworths (FSC N002141) sends its recyclable cardboard and paper.

“Our trials have confirmed that our customers want to reduce their plastic shopping bag usage and invest in low cost reusable bags or use paper bags. Since we launched our low cost reusable bag and in-store communications encouraging customers to choose reusable bags, we have seen about a 30% reduction in plastic shopping bag sales across all stores which is very encouraging.  By phasing out our single use plastic shopping bags, we will remove between 5 and 6 tonnes of plastic waste,” confirms Feroz Koor: Woolworths Holdings Group Head of Sustainability.

“Over the last two years, our suppliers have both received financial and business advisory support from the Woolworths Supplier Development programme to invest in new machinery and have employed additional staff to meet the increased demands of the paper and reusable fabric bags so that we are able to remove single-use plastic bags going forward”

“Smart, sustainable solutions often take time to get off the ground but when they do, they change our world for the better instantly.  Together with our customers we are looking forward to removing all single use plastic bags from our stores.” concludes Koor.

ster kinekor is back!

28 August 2020

Welcome back! Bookings are officially open! Let’s all get ready to share some great moments at their greatest on the BIG screen! Visit our website and app for all the movies you’ve been waiting to watch! We are excited to announce that the cinema will reopen on Friday 28th August 2020. Your health and safety is our top priority. We’ve put in place key changes to make the cinema as safe and comfortable as possible for you, your family and friends and our employees.

Deputy CEO, Motheo Matsau says “We’ve been getting ready to welcome patrons back to the cinema since Government’s announcement on the 6th July 2020. We have taken every step to ensure the safe return of our guests and staff to the cinema with our staff having undergone extensive Covid-19 operations training.”

All Ster-Kinekor cinemas will operate with new safety procedures that ensure compliance with directives set out by government. Each theatre will be permitted a maximum of 50 guests per auditorium (excluding staff).

Some of the new measures taken include regulated seating, marked foyer floors to manage social distancing as well as longer show staggers to manage the number of people in our foyers at any one time. We will ensure stringent hygiene protocols are in place for the safety of our guests and staff. To limit contact, no transactions will take place in cinema and all movie tickets and snacks must be purchased through the Ster-Kinekor App or on our website. After the show guests will be required to exit the auditorium row-by-row starting from the back of the cinema and are requested to remove their empty snack containers to discard in the dustbins which will be placed in the cinema foyers.

Our already high cleaning standards will be enhanced by a cleaning protocol designed to sanitise frequently touched surfaces in the cinema. Before we open our doors, we will use a misting device to treat all our auditoria, as well as our lounge areas, foyers, hand railings and seats.

We will continue to sanitise the cinemas before and after each show and have increased our cleaning times between every show to make sure all our seats and surfaces are clean and safe.

Masks and temperature screening will be compulsory when entering the cinema foyer however masks may be temporarily removed in the auditorium to enjoy the refreshments.

All our staff will be screened before we open the cinemas each day, as well as at each shift. We will wear face masks and gloves where required and our staff have been trained on safe work practices to ensure safety for themselves and for our guests.

A number of blockbusters are heading to cinema with the upcoming line-up including Christopher Nolan’s Tenet releasing 28 August, Disney’s live-action Mulan remake set to be released 11 September.

Book your tickets at or download the SK App on your smartphone.  For news and updates, go to Facebook: Ster-Kinekor Theatres | follow Ster-Kinekor on Twitter: @Ster-Kinekor. For all queries, call Ticketline on 0861-Movies (668 437).
