The kids are all at home right now, so let’s keep them busy with a few simple, fun and easy things they can make for Mom this Mother’s Day! Moms love personal things from their children and will keep and treasure these forever. You can get all these art supplies at our Checkers store and maybe even at our Woolies and The Crazy Store – so come take a good look around to find everything you need!
1. Homemade Crayon Candles
These are super fun and easy! All you need is a box of crayons, wax, wicks and a few containers. Note that it’s best if you grate or chop the crayons so that they melt a lot faster!
To melt the wax, create a double boiler using an empty coffee can and a pot. Fill the pot with about 4cm of water and bring to a slow simmer. Add the wax to the coffee can and allow the wax to melt until clear. Use an old spatula or disposable kebab stick to help stir.
Once the wax is melted, turn the stove down to low. Keep the wax warm, because making the layers takes a bit of time. Create one layer of colour at a time. Pour hot wax in to the bowl or container with the broken crayon. You can use plain white candles for this, break the wax off of it and keep the wick aside. Use a stick to stir and allow the crayon to melt. Stir the wax around and pour the wax in the jar. This is also the point where you would add any essential oils if you want a scented candle.
Place a wick in your jar and then carefully pour the wax in to the jar. You can twist it around a pencil to help keep it straight. Once you’ve poured a layer, put it in the fridge to set. When the layer is cool and firm, start again with the next crayon and the next layer. Continue on until you run out of room for layers. Have fun!
2. Heart Craft Card
We love this craft because it’s super fun, easy and especially great for toddlers. All you’ll need is:
- cardboard rolls (kitchen rolls, toilet rolls or wrapping paper tubes)
- rubber bands
- paper or cardboard
To make the cardboard heart, you’re going to create a crease in the top side (at the end) of the cardboard roll. This will give you the two bumps that form the top of the heart. Then you’ll need to squeeze the bottom of the cardboard roll to form the pointy bottom of the heart. Secure this shape with your rubber bands until firm.
Have your child choose the colours that she wants for her project, and pour the paint onto a flat surface like a plate. Now he or she can dip the end of a cardboard roll into the paint and stamp hearts all over the canvas. Easy and fun!
3. Reasons Why I Love You!
All moms love to hear how much they mean to their family. We love this idea of making a little binder filled with your top 10 reasons why you love your mom! It’s so easy and fun to make and you can get the whole family (except mom) involved.
All you need is:
+ Cardboard to print the cards on (if you can’t find cardboard, you can simply glue a few plain pages together to make your paper thicker.
+ A hole punch
+ A keyring (or your could use ribbon or string!)
+ A pen to write with
This is a super fun project and something that might even bring a tear to mom’s eye! You can also make a set like these of ‘vouchers’, for example – one page says “Free hug” or “I’ll clean my room” or “Foot massage for mom”. She might really like that too!
Happy crafting everyone. We hope that you found something here that you’d like to make for the mom in your life. Wishing all our moms a beautiful and wonderful day with their families!
